‘A step change’ for Sidmouth’s own housing action group
Gateway has become a registered Charity having satisfied UK Charity Commission requirements.
Since being established as a community based organisation eight years ago after the death of two rough sleepers, Gateway has provided immediate assistance while also helping a heavy caseload of people who are at risk of losing their homes.
The organisation’s chair, Richard Barrett, says the new legal status is a tribute to the hard work by volunteers who are the backbone of Gateway’s work. ‘Our submission showed we are relevant to the needs of the vulnerable in the immediate locality, and the organisations we work with to provide sustainable solutions. Becoming a charity is a huge step change for us that carries legal responsibilities, and which allows us to engage supporters from a recognised position of trust.’
As it developed Gateway has come into contact with a wide variety of people. While rough sleepers are the most visible there are others living with a daily housing crisis as they struggle to keep a home. Gateway is run entirely through voluntary effort, and is always on the lookout for those willing to he
lp at different levels. This can involve assisting with administration, making calls, spending time at the meeting point in the Mustard Seed café or work alongside the frontline team.
